Threefold Cord

August 27, 2022 – Ron Green

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

So what dose the Bible say about the “Threefold Cord.” What is a Threefold Cord? The Threefold Cord is the Bride, the Groom, and God. With the three strands braided together makes for a strong relationship, that is not easily broken.

Think about this for a moment. If you had 3 strands of 1/4” Nylon Rope, the tensile strength would be 1700 lbs. Now if you took that same rope and braided it together, you would have a tensile strength of 2100 lbs. That cord just got much stronger just by braiding it together.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis‬ ‭2:18‬ ‭

When God saw that Adam was alone, He saw that something was missing. What do you think was missing? Could it be that Adam wasn’t able to be fruitful and multiply, as he was the only one of his kind. God created all things to be fruitful and multiply to show the Glory of God. God’s decision to created woman was just that. So that Adam (man), could multiply and be fruitful. Adam needed Eve to reflect the Glory of God.

But Adam an Eve needed to live in unity with one another, “the two became 1 flesh” so that the inter-Trinitarian relationship of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could be properly modeled.

So the Lord God caused the man (Adam), to fall into a deep sleep. While man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the Man. “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Genesis‬ ‭2:21-24‬ ‭

God did not creat a companion for Adam to rule over, but a companion to share his life with. As woman was created from the rib of Adam, that makes woman equal to man.

Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes‬ ‭4:9-12‬ ‭

Conclusion:

Whether it be a spouse, a family member, a good friend, or even a care-giver, God has placed people in our lives to help us better see His goodness and love. When we reject the help and influence of other, life takes on significant burden and hardship. Continuing to read from the book of Ecclesiastes we learn that standing alone, we are easily attached and defeated. But two can stand back-to-back and conquer. A third is even better for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. That third cord is Christ Jesus. If Jesus is on your side, who could be against you. If you keep Jesus as center of your relationship, you will share a long life together. No, it doesn’t mean that you will not have trials along the way. But you will also have a helper. That helper is Jesus, standing right next to you and He will help you through every situation. When you need help, call out to your family and friends. Lean on your “Great Helper,” Jesus Christ. Just as Jesus did, use the Bible and Nature as your text book of life.

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.

‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭4:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬
