The Whole Armor Of God

December 10, 2022 – Ron Green

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Ephesians 6:10 NKJV

It’s only by the Lord’s protection that a believer can stand firm against all strategies of the devil. God’s armor is intended to defend against attacks from Satan.

In the book of Ephesians, Paul uses the physical armor worn by the Roman soldiers as imagery for spiritual armor used by believers. Most of the equipment worn was used to defend and not to attack. Paul’s focus is not on the precise function of each piece but on God’s gift. Grounding in Christ and Scriptures provide protection and ability to stand your ground.

So what is the Armor of God? You can read about the Armor of God in the book of Ephesians 6:10-17. The belt of truth, shoes, shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.

The Belt of Truth

God’s righteousness: either the righteousness God credits to those who believe in Christ or the righteous way of life brought about by the transforming work of the Spirit of God In believers lives. This implies the other.

Shoes

Put on the peace that comes from the Good News. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns! Isaiah 52:7

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Romans 5:1

Shield of Faith

Faith is trust in Christ as Savior or trust in God to meet one’s needs in evil times. This is Faith that leads believers away from temptation from sin. The Fiery Arrows came from the arrows being dipped into pitch and ignited before being shot.

And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:13

The Helmet of Salvation

Protect the mind with assurance that God has indeed saved and gave eternal life to those who believe in Christ.

He put on righteousness as his body armor and placed the helmet of salvation on his head. He clothed himself with a robe of vengeance and wrapped himself in a cloak of divine passion. Isaiah 59:17

But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. 1 Thessalonians 5:8

The Sword of the Spirit

Is the Word of God to respond back to an attack either with the Good News or with the spoken or written Word of God.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. Hebrews 4:12-13

Conclusion:

The Spirit of the Lord, cherished, is a sure remedy for the disease of covetousness. Talk it, live it. Put on the Whole Armor of the Gospel. We need more of the spirit of prayer and more faith. The first chapter of Colossians holds up before us our high responsibility.

This Day With God: Cure for Covetousness, December 4

Ellen White writes in part:

Continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard. Colossians 1:23

As I studied the Whole Armor of God, I felt like the Holy Spirit really took the time to help me. God knew that I would need every piece of equipment to defend against Satan’s attacks. Each piece has an important part to aid in our defense. It’s only by His Grace that I receive even one piece of Armor. When I have the whole Armor of God in place, I feel 8 foot tall and bullet proof.

We are not only living in the “Days of Noah” but these days are evil. We are not fighting against flesh and blood but of Good and Evil. Stand firm in your faith and be a Soldier in God’s Army. Dress appropriately, put on the Whole Armor of God.
