Be My Valentine

February 7-13, 2021 – Joseph Castillo

I remember being in school when Valentine’s Day would come around.  Especially when I was in 5th and 6th grade.  Do you remember the little heart-shaped tart candies?  They came in many different colors: red, light green, pink, orange, and yellow.  They had little sayings printed on them.  Some said: “Be Mine,” “Hug Me,” and the dreaded “Kiss Me.”  You had to be careful who you handed those out to!  Those are very significant sayings when you are in elementary school.  Remember the teasing of your friends? “Are you going to ask the cute little redhead girl to be your valentine?”  I remember my hands getting all sweaty when I took that first step to give the little girl a valentine’s card?  Valentine’s Day is big stuff!

I also remember Valentine’s Day in high school and meeting my true Valentine, Belinda.  I would sing to her “Be My Valentine, Be My Valentine, Be My Valentine.”  I met her my junior year in high school and I have been giving her valentine candies, cards, and singing to her ever since.  Fast forward 30 years later and our love has grown very deep.  We have three beautiful girls and a home that is filled with love.

We have all heard that “God is Love” (1 John 4:16).  And it’s true.  The Bible tells us that it is so.  Can you picture it on a heart-shaped candy?  How about these from God: “Be Mine” (John 17: 9, 10), “Only You” (1 Corinthians 3:23), and “Kiss Me” (Luke 7:45).  Do you see the God who loves you and wants to be in a loving relationship with you?  His love goes so deep for you that it took Him to the cross.  He spread out His arms to show you how much He loves you.  He took that first step just to have a chance to be your Valentine.  The greatest act of love that was ever shown happened at the cross – God’s invitation for you to be His Valentine!

Zechariah 3:10 says that Jesus sings over us.  Can you hear Him singing over you?  “Be My Valentine, Be My Valentine, Be My Valentine.”  Accept His invitation and sink into His arms and sing back to Him.  Try it.  Sing to Him “Be My Valentine, Be My Valentine…”
